PTFE is the most commonly used fluropolymer lining material, although other materials such as FEP, PFA, ECTFE, PVDF are also available.
PTFE lined pipes and tanks provide a long-term cost-effective solution in applications that operate under severe conditions that involve moving or storing highly corrosive fluids. PTFE lining is chemically inert and resists many corrosive fluids operating under high pressure or high temperatures up to 230°C. The lining materials achieve this whilst utilising the structural strength of the pipe material.
The benefits of using PTFE is to give pipes a long life-span whilst managing the risk of catastrophic failure. Any failure could result in damage to the pipe and surroundings, resulting in high pipe replacement costs, processing downtime and most importantly OH&S issues by exposing people to corrosive fluids such as acids.
Metal pipes such as carbon steel or stainless steel will corrode over time when conveying aggressive liquids such as acids. To protect metal pipes from corrosion, a PTFE lining is manufactured to fit tightly inside the pipe.
PTFE Lining Process
Fluoro Pacific provides PTFE lined pipes to customer specifications. The process to manufacture involves a PTFE cylinder being heated, extruded (stretched) and inserted into a pipe. Most often the PTFE tube is of a greater diameter than the pipe and being a thermoset plastic will revert to size or as much as the metal pipe will allow when tension is released, thereby giving a tight immovable fit. The additional PTFE rod length allowed at either end undergoes flaring with the PTFE heated and compressed against the face of the pipe flange. Metallic bolts then compress two flared edges to create a tight seal to increase pipe length or to other metal surfaces
